1.       How was European Marine Imports born and what has been its evolution until now?

European Marine Imports was set up exclusively as a vehicle to import and distribute Sasga Yachts’ Menorcan trawlers in New Zealand. The managing director, Ernest Henshaw, has a wealth of business experience in various sectors, however, this is his first time in the pleasure boat industry. His partner, Bruce McGill, has considerable experience in the yachting sector having worked for a long time as Managing Director representing one of New Zealand’s largest boatyards.

2.       How has the Menorquín been received on the New Zealander market, especially in your area of influence?

There has been a great deal of interest in the brand thanks to the large investment in advertising, such as advertisements in trade magazines and press releases. Additionally, the arrival of the first Menorquín in December, a 34HT, has created a lot of expectation.

3.       What are the main characteristics of our product that most appeal to the New Zealander shipowner?

Undoubtedly, seaworthiness and build quality. The Menorquín by Sasga Yachts is a truly complete boat, a boat built for sailing. For this reason, it is a boat that appeals, above all, to people who, like us, have been sailors and are now in their seventies and no longer want to continue hoisting the mainsail, but want an easier and more comfortable life.

4.       How would you describe the New Zealander nautical culture in your area of influence, which is difference form surrounding areas or countries? How does the Menorquín fit into this nautical culture?

New Zealand is a small country which offers a very large coastline and has a number of regions offering unique cruising environments around sounds and offshore islands. With most major cities located on the coast, the New Zealand population have traditionally had a strong connection with the sea and boating. The ratio of boat-owners to population is considerably higher than in most countries, offering a market opportunity to all styles of both motor and sailing yachts, and in particular, those offering comfortable live-aboard facilities.

5.       The Nautical Industry is a sector in constant evolution. How these changes are being addressed by European Marine Imports, in coordination with Sasga Yachts? Due to the current situation, what new challenges are you facing together in order to meet future demands and needs of this niche of market?

EMI is introducing the Sasga Yachts Menorquín to the New Zealand market, which is receiving this type of boat with a lot of curiosity. We are currently working together with the shipyard to make the “Mediterranean Trawler” a boat that fully adapts to the needs and lifestyle of the New Zealand owner.
